Paintless Dent Removal (PDR)

A relatively young area of body repair that has absorbed the experience of panel beaters, chasers, and tinsmiths.

The dent repair technology commonly called "paintless dent removal" is a relatively young area of body repair. Where exactly it originated is impossible to say today, but one thing is clear: PDR has absorbed the knowledge, techniques, and experience of several professions. First of all, panel beating. Although panel beating does not involve preserving the paint coating, paintless dent removal took from it the basic principles of working with metal, and many panel beating tools became the predecessors of modern PDR tools.

And yet paintless dent removal and panel beating are not the same thing, and with each passing year, as technology develops, they diverge more and more. To become a dent removal specialist, a modern panel beater needs to learn almost from scratch, and previous experience often hinders rather than helps.

The difference between paintless dent removal and panel beating is roughly the same as between a blacksmith and a jeweler. Both work with metal, but their goals, approach, methods, tools, and precision are different. PDR does not replace the panel beating profession — there are cases where panel beating is indispensable — but very often it helps to avoid both panel beating and painting. And if panel beating is still done using PDR techniques, the result will still be jewelry-like.

The profession of a paintless dent removal specialist has also absorbed the experience of chasers and tinsmiths, once common in Central Asia.

Where the technology came from

It is believed that the PDR specialist profession was born at Mercedes-Benz: managers needed to solve the problem of dents that cars received during transportation, at exhibitions, and at storage lots — for example, from hail. Such incidents caused damage to the company.

Having developed the technology, Mercedes-Benz kept it in-house for a long time, and only around the mid-nineties did this knowledge spread to the world. Since then, PDR has changed noticeably for the better: it was developed not by specialists of one company but, one could say, by a collective mind — talented people shared their findings at exhibitions and seminars.

Main methods

Today, paintless dent removal includes several areas that complement each other and help the specialist achieve the desired result:

  • Working with a hook and knockdown
  • Glue system
  • Blending
  • Overstress system (express repair)

Together, these methods allow restoring the panel's surface without damaging the paint, working with reflections, and returning the original orange peel texture.

To sum up: paintless dent removal is a revolutionary technology and a real gift for car enthusiasts. And for specialists passionate about their craft, it is, though not always easy, still a joy and satisfaction from every victory.
